A brief history of the palace
Thirumalai Nayak Mahal is a state-protected monument administered by the Tamil Nadu Department of Archaeology. Madurai ruler Thirumalai Nayak built it in 1636 CE, during a reign that ran from 1627 to 1659 CE.
The original complex included Swargavilasa and Rangavilasa, as well as a theatre, palace shrine, queen’s apartment, armoury, palanquin building, royal bandstand, quarters, pond and gardens. The surviving building is the main palace building where the king lived; the original palace was four times larger.
Thirumalai Nayak’s grandson Chockanatha Nayak demolished much of the palace, intending to reuse its carvings in a new palace in Tiruchirapalli. That plan did not succeed. Lord Napier later partially restored the palace between 1866 and 1872. The visible portions include the Entrance Gate, Main Hall and Dance Hall.

Architecture and features to notice
The palace’s Indo-Saracenic style is marked by stuccowork on its domes, decorated arches, massive white pillars and polished black stone pillars.
Its Sorgavilasam, or Celestial Pavilion, measures 75 m by 52 m. The Madurai district government describes it as built of brick and mortar without a rafter or girder. Along the courtyard corridor, several white pillars stand 20 m high and measure 4 m in circumference.
Look for the contrast between the scale of the pillars and the intricate decoration of the arches and domes. The courtyard and surviving halls give a sense of the palace’s scale, even though much of the original complex is gone.
